In the Spring of 2024, we got underway with the building of a new community garden for the Moss Park community. Through partnering with Toronto Community Housing, we began work on a plot of land in the green space next to our market.
The garden is 2,000 square feet with 11 raised beds for growing produce. All of the beds were built from scratch by staff and volunteers. Throughout the process from cleanup to completion, there were well over 100 volunteers involved.
Accessibility was an important factor when building the garden. The groundwork is accessible for those using mobility aids and wheelchairs. We installed a 10 foot long accessible raised garden bed where wheelchairs can come right to the edge of the bed. We also have mobility aids including chairs and a kneeling aids for those who need them. We also installed benches for seating for the community to enjoy the garden even if they can’t physically participate in the gardening.
We are profoundly grateful to the Peter Gilgan Foundation and the Sprott Foundation for their invaluable support in bringing this community garden to life for Moss Park. Together, we look forward to many years of growth, connection, and harvest.
