Tell us a little about yourself
I’m a former office drone who has found the joy of shirking work to volunteer and be a general nuisance about town. In my free time I do pottery and rock climb.
How did you get involved with Building Roots?
I needed something to do during the first lockdown. I believe Krysten Wong Tam (former councilor for Ward 11) posted about BR on her website.
How long have you been with us?
Three years—since April 2020
Why do you volunteer?
I like being busy and I like being able to go to different areas of the city and see what’s going on. It’s a good way to meet people and to learn new skills. And it’s a good perspective shift.
What’s your favorite thing to do during your volunteer shift? Why?
I like going to the garden and doing my rounds and checking on all the new growth from the previous week. What’s ripe? What’s been eaten by rabbits? What weeds need pulling, etc. And I like doing my deliveries and wishing the regular recipients a good weekend.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
I appreciate BR always treating their volunteers with respect and doing their best to make everyone feel appreciated for their work. And I appreciate that they let me take home bananas.
*Without our volunteers, Building Roots couldn’t function. We have immense gratitude for everything they do and for what they bring to our organization as a whole and specifically to Ashbridge Urban Farm and Moss Park Market. Thank-you.
